Tips-for-Anyone-New-to-Martial-Arts-Classic-Fight-TeamA martial arts practice is for any individual who is willing to learn. Through martial arts, you learn self-defense techniques while building self-confidence, discipline, and self-esteem.

If you’re new to martial arts, you might be excited and willing to learn something new. But you might also feel nervous, intimidated, and curious about what to expect at your first class.

If you’re interested in giving martial arts a try, here are a few tips for anyone new to martial arts to calm your nerves:

1. Don’t worry about your current level of fitness.

One of the common assumptions about martial arts is that you have to be in great shape before showing up to train. And while one of the benefits of martial arts is improved physical health and fitness, you don’t need to be fit to get started. Martial arts is for all fitness levels, and it doesn’t matter where you are when you start. The more you train and the longer you stick with it, your fitness will improve. But don’t worry about where you are as you get started.

2. Accept that you’re a beginner and keep an open mind.

Another element of martial arts that makes it intimidating for beginners is the process of learning a new skill. As adults, we’re used to knowing how to do things. But as a beginner in martial arts, you will probably show up and feel like you’re five steps behind the other students in your class. Keep an open mind, and don’t be too hard on yourself. Accept that you’re a beginner, try not to compare yourself to others, and focus on learning. Set realistic expectations and realize that you won’t be an expert or a black belt after one class.

3. Expect to be sore.

The first time you try martial arts, you will move and try techniques you’ve probably never done before. As a result, you’ll probably be sore afterward. Soreness isn’t a sign that you did something wrong or that you don’t belong in the class. It just shows that you tried something new, and if you keep training, the soreness and discomfort will subside. The soreness might not disappear completely, but as your training and fitness level improve, it will become a less frequent occurrence.
