Mobility-Training-and-Its-Importance-in-Martial-Arts-Classic-Fight-TeamWhen it comes to supplementing your martial arts training, it’s easy to think of activities like running or strength training that will build endurance, strength, and power off the mat. However, another element that plays an essential role in your physical training is mobility.

Mobility vs. Flexibility

If you’re thinking that you get plenty of mobility work because you stretch all the time, then let’s take a look at the difference between mobility and flexibility.

Mobility is the active control of a joint through its range of motion. The distinguishing factor in mobility training is that you’re in control of the movement. Flexibility, on the other hand, is passive. Think of flexibility training in terms of static stretching, where you’re passively moving a joint through a range of motion using gravity.

Why is Mobility Training Important?

In a martial arts practice, it’s advantageous to use a joint’s full range of motion while being in control of the joint movement. By taking the time to work on mobility where you move a joint through its full range of motion, you’ll not only improve your skills and technique, but you’ll also promote better joint health.

Here are a few considerations in adding mobility work to your martial arts training:

Be Consistent.

Like any other skill, to get the most benefits out of your mobility training, you must be consistent. A few sessions here and there aren’t going to be enough to create a lasting change in how your body moves.

Be Aware.

When you’re new to mobility exercises, it’s easy to just go through the motions, maybe loosen up your hips, and you call it good. However, you’ll get much more out of your mobility training when you are aware of what each movement or exercise is doing. Be mindful of your movements and their effects on your body and joints.

Be Patient.

Changes in your ranges of motion are not going to happen overnight. Be patient and give your body time to adapt to mobility training. If you don’t notice any difference in your martial arts practice right away, it’s not because you’re doing something wrong or wasting your time. Stick with it, and you’ll begin to notice positive results.
