Your-First-Martial-Arts-Class-Classic-Fight-TeamWhen you’re new to martial arts, it’s common to feel nervous or intimidated about your first class. You’re not the only one to ever feel this way.

Here are a few things to expect at your first martial arts class. Make sure you give yourself plenty of time and show up a few minutes early. You’ll have time to introduce yourself to the instructor, meet some of the other students, and get familiar with the layout of the school.

1. Expect a workout.

A lot of students start martial arts because of the fitness aspect. Your first class will likely be a great workout. You might even wind up working harder than you anticipated. And not only will you get a full-body workout, but you’re also going to do some new movements. You’ll probably be sore the next day, but don’t let that keep you from going back.

2. Expect to learn something new.

Remember, this is your first class. You can’t possibly be an expert, so go in with an open mind. Tell yourself you’re there to learn. Stay focused on your instructor and avoid comparing yourself to your fellow students. Focus on yourself and don’t be too hard on yourself.

3. Expect to meet new people.

Martial arts appeals to all fitness and experience levels. You might show up with different goals, but you will have at least one thing in common – an interest in martial arts. So, show up for class and be ready to meet some new people. You’ll do great.
