Have you ever set goals for your martial arts training, only to let them fall off your radar? When you’re working toward any goal, including your martial arts goals, it’s important to check in on your progress. By periodically checking in on your progress, you’re more likely to stick with the process and increase your chances of success and getting results.
A goal check-in is your opportunity to revisit, revise, and make a plan for the future. Here are a few tips for a martial arts goal check-in that you can also use at any point during the year:
1. Measure your progress.
If you have defined your goals so that they’re measurable, then a check-in is the time to gauge your progress. As you look at your progress over the past several weeks, also ask yourself what’s been working. And what can you continue doing that will help you achieve success? At the same time, ask yourself what things aren’t working? Now is an excellent time to make changes to the things that aren’t working in your training routine.
2. Assess goal relevance.
If it’s been a while since you checked in with your goals, they may be no longer relevant. Are you still excited to work toward the goals you previously set? If not, then it’s time to set some new ones. Now is a good time to reset and define relevant goals. Determine what you’re most excited about or interested in working toward at this time and set goals around those objectives.
3. Revise or create a plan.
As part of your check-in, also make a plan for how you intend to make future progress. This might be modifications to an existing plan or coming up with a completely new strategy. Include the next time you’ll do a goal check-in. Having this timeline helps you define and set checkpoints so that you are more likely to continue improving, learning, and achieving success.
