Because it’s a non-striking martial art, Jiu-Jitsu is known as the “gentle art.” Rather than striking, kicking, or punching, Jiu-Jitsu utilizes grips and leverage to unbalance your opponent and ultimately achieve a submission – “the tap.”
In terms of sparring and self-defense, a smaller, weaker person can defend against someone bigger, stronger, or heavier attacker by using good technique and leverage.
With that being said, Jiu-Jitsu becomes so much more than the martial arts training you put in on the mats. It is a way to:
- Improve your health and well-being
- Build character
- Develop a new way of living
Health and Well-Being
Training Jiu Jitsu leads to increases in so many different aspects of your fitness. Rather than heading to the gym and going through a traditional workout routine, Jiu Jitsu is a full-body workout that develops conditioning, strength, flexibility, balance, and coordination.
Build Character
Jiu Jitsu classes are held in a structured, safe, and supportive learning environment. This type of environment promotes the physical and mental health benefits of training Jiu-Jitsu. It also encourages athletes of all ages to develop character traits such as self-awareness, confidence, respect, teamwork, and discipline.
A New Lifestyle
Over time, Jiu Jitsu becomes so much more than a workout or a hobby. It becomes a lifestyle. You take what you learn on the mats and apply it to other areas of your life. Jiu Jitsu athletes become more patient, more disciplined, more goal-oriented, and better problem solvers who refuse to quit. You find a way to enjoy how you train and how you live, and you want to share that with others in your family, workplace, and community.
