If you’re looking for ways to get the most out of your martial arts training, the solution might seem counterintuitive. Rather than looking for ways to hurry through your training and speed up the process, the thing you might need most is to slow down.
Here are five ways to slow down and improve your martial arts training:
1. Focus on the process.
If you’re only focused on your ultimate goal, then you might try to rush to reach a particular outcome. As a result, you lose track of the small steps you need between where you are now and where you want to be. Focus on the process. Instead of thinking about where you want to be in several weeks, pay attention to where you are today and what you need to work on in a single training session.
2. Be patient.
Martial arts training is a marathon, not a sprint. You need to be patient and give yourself time – time for your body and mind to adjust to your training and improve. As much as you want those changes to happen overnight, it’s not realistic. And if you feel like you’re struggling with being patient, see tip #1 (focus on the process).
3. Don’t look for shortcuts.
There are no martial arts training “hacks” or shortcuts. There are no secrets to skipping ahead; you have to walk before you can run. And that means it all comes down to commitment, discipline, and effort.
4. Take care of yourself.
Maintaining an intense level of training week after week, day after day, isn’t sustainable. Your body needs time to recover. Give yourself days to slow down, rest, and refocus on what you need both physically and mentally to continue making progress.
5. Train at half-speed.
Literally slowing down your movements can help you catch mistakes that you didn’t realize you were making. If you don’t notice small errors or correct movement patterns, then you’ll continue to rehearse poor form over and over.
