Whether you are setting goals for your martial arts training, your career, or any other area of your life, the SMART goal framework can help.
Here is how you can set SMART goals for yourself both on and off the mat.
1. Specific
When you set a goal that is too broad, it’s hard to figure out what you’re working toward. If your goal is “to get better at Jiu Jitsu,” what does this really mean? How will you get better at Jiu Jitsu? The more clear and defined your goal is, the more likely you are to make progress.
2. Measurable
Once you’ve set clearly defined goals, next you will want to figure out how you will measure your progress. Rather than creating a goal like, “Go to more classes.” you can make this goal measurable by modifying it to something like, “Go to class three times each week.”
3. Attainable
Goals should challenge you. But at the same time, they need to be attainable. A goal that stretches you too far can make you less motivated to work hard. If you know a goal is not realistic, then alter it until you find something that is challenging but still possible.
4. Relevant
After you’ve determined that your goal is specific, measurable, and attainable, the next step is to ask yourself if your goal is relevant. Is it something that you’re excited about at this point in your life? Or how does this goal fit into your long-term plan for success both in martial arts and your life? If you’re not excited about this particular goal at this point in your life, then you may need to switch gears and think about the goals that are relevant to you, your training, and your life.
5. Time-Based
Creating a measurable goal is one way that you’re able to track your progress. Another piece of keeping track of your progress is with a timeline. Give yourself a timeframe for achieving your goal. If your goal is several months in the future, then consider setting smaller goals that are like stepping stones to get you to where you want to be.
