Tackle-Weaknesses-in-Martial-Arts-Classic-Fight-TeamIf you’ve been training martial arts for a while, you probably have a pretty good idea of your strengths and weaknesses.

In martial arts training, you want to make sure that your strengths remain a strength. At the same time, if you only train your strengths, you might be neglecting areas of potential growth. Rather than avoiding your weaknesses, tackling them can make you a better, more well-rounded athlete.

Here are a few tips on how to tackle your weaknesses in martial arts:

1. Acknowledge Weaknesses

It’s easy to ignore or avoid the skills or areas you’re not that good at. Rather than addressing these gaps in your training, you end up figuring out ways around them. However, to tackle your weaknesses, you need to acknowledge them. Then, once you’ve identified and acknowledged your weaknesses, you can make a plan to address them.

2. Recruit Guidance and Support

Recruiting guidance and support from an expert is a great way to get started on tackling and improving a weakness. A good instructor, coach, and teacher will know how to work with you to improve. And, they will collaborate with you in a way that prevents you from getting overwhelmed, frustrated, or discouraged.

3. Commit to Hard Work

When you’re focused on improving a strength, change tends to come fairly quickly. But change doesn’t seem to come as easy when you are working to improve your weaknesses. Working on your weaknesses requires an extra level of commitment, attention, patience, and effort. You will probably need to set aside some of your other martial arts goals for a while.

4. Set Goals

To keep track of how you’re doing with tackling your weaknesses, set goals around the process. These goals will help you keep track of your progress. Once you have your goals, the next step is to create smaller checkpoints to use along the way. Use these smaller checkpoints to keep yourself motivated and committed to improving.
