While it’s true that some people are born with specific talents that make them great athletes, it’s not all about what you’re born with. Part of successfully accomplishing your martial arts goals, at any level, is due to trainable skills. And these skills have nothing to do with talent.
Here are eight trainable skills that have nothing to do with talent:
1. Punctuality
If you’re hardly ever on time for appointments, meetings, and classes, you can train yourself to be more punctual. Being on time means you’ll never have to rush through a warm-up or miss valuable training time.
2. Work Ethic
A strong work ethic develops over time by creating habits like staying focused, maintaining motivation, seeing things through to completion, and training with discipline.
3. Effort
Rather than relying on your talent, effort comes from your level of commitment and willingness to work hard.
4. Energy
Energy is a skill that tends to follow the “the more you give, the more you get” pattern. The more energy you put into your training, the more drive and motivation you’ll experience as a result.
5. Attitude
An athlete with a lot of talent but a poor attitude may not get very far. Even if you’ve had a negative approach to training in the past, you can train your mind to take a new approach.
6. Passion
Always remember why you got started with martial arts. Train your mind to focus on your purpose and your passion.
7. Coachability
Coachability refers to your willingness to listen to your coaches, consider their feedback, and act on it.
8. Preparation
To improve as an athlete, you must be willing to think ahead and take action to prepare for the future and the results you’re working toward achieving.
